Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) represents more than 750 municipal electric, gas, water, and broadband utilities statewide, and maintains a marketing relationship with more than 185 associate member businesses. IAMU represents its members before the Iowa Legislatures, administers mutual aid programs, offers job training and safety programs, co-sponsors the Iowa Public Agency Investment Trust, and sponsors the Safety Group Insurance Program.

Position Purpose

This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and scheduling training workshops for Power Lineman, Apprentice Linemen, and Journeyman, and Line Mechanics; being the point of contact for the apprenticeship training program; reviewing and creating training materials; conducting annual safety training for members and being a subject matter expert for members.

Job Functions:

  • Plan, coordinate and schedule annual training workshops for: Overhead, Underground, Electric Metering, and Transformer Training
  • Conduct annual safety training at member facilities
  • Participate in NCCER (crane) training and physical assessments
  • Plan coordinate and conduct wooden pole climbing classes
  • Support requests for training from other entities
  • Review, revise and create training materials and apprentice training materials
  • Point of contact for apprentices and/or managers regarding apprentice training program
  • Conduct assessments of member’s infrastructure
  • Support requests from members regarding the operation and maintenance of their electric infrastructure
  • Participate in Electric Safety and Training Committee meetings
  • Support the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee
  • Provide instructional training to apprentices per the IAMU Apprenticeship Training program (on-the-job training, technical support, etc.)

Working Conditions

  • Various outdoor work activities are sometimes performed in adverse weather conditions
  • Will require travel and overnight lodging

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a formal Line Repairer apprenticeship (registered with the Department of Labor), or
  • A minimum of ten years of experience performing the work duties and activities common to the electric utility industry
  • Class A Commercial Driver’s License (with Air Brake Endorsement), applicant will be required to obtain within six months of hire
  • Trained in CPR, First Aid and AED unit
  • Ability to do ordinary line construction, operating and maintenance work.  Perform troubleshooting, reasonable knowledge of NESC, State Electrical Code, regulatory requirements of overhead and underground electric installations, familiarity with live line maintenance tools and equipment
  • Familiarity with Computers and Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal plus reading comprehension and mathematical skills and the ability to work independently
